Phillip G. Chavez Sr.

PHILLIP G. CHAVEZ, SR. 3/24/1934 - 7/6/2013 Phillip G. Chavez, Sr., passed away on July 6th 2013. He was 79. Phill was a longtime educator in Barstow serving the community for 40 years with BUSD. He was born on March 24, 1934 in San Bernardino, CA. He graduated from Banning High School in 1951 where he was a prominent figure in athletics, leading the Banning Football team to a winning season. He attended the University of Redlands. While still attending college, Phill moved to Barstow and began teaching Special Education at Waterman School in the early 1950's. He continued at Waterman School through the 1950's and 1960's in the capacity of teacher and principal. In 1969 he became the Principal at Montara Elementary School and served in that position for nearly 30 years. During these years he mentored not only students but young educators as well. By the time he retired in 1998, it was not unusual for Phill to be involved in the education of 2nd and even 3rd generation students at Montara! Phil never lost his zeal for learning. Retirement afforded him the time to pursue reading, his lifelong passion, as well as traveling. His final years were spent reading, visiting 38 countries, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marcella Kay of Apple Valley, three daughters and one son, three sons-in-law, and a daughter-in-law, a brother, as well as six grand- children, one great grandchild, three nephews and one niece. A public celebration of life will take place at the Aspen Club House in Sun City, Apple Valley on July 28th at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome.
