Shirley "Patty" Russell

SHIRLEY "PATTY" RUSSELL 5/2/1945 - 2/26/2014 Shirley "Patty" Russell passed away on February 26th, 2014. Shirley was born to Jack and Charlene Birk in Springfield, MO. She grew up in Yermo, CA. graduating from Barstow High School in 1963. Shirley resided in Barstow and Yermo for 65 years. She was an active member of the community serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, was a member of the Barstow Junior Women's Club, and served as a board member on the Yermo Community Services District. She loved singing around the Barstow area with her band the Calico Ramblers. She worked at Calico for many years before opening her own hair salon, Shirl's Curls, in Yermo. Afterwards she drove buses, transporting passengers to Ft. Irwin for ten years. Prior to retiring, Shirley worked for Barstow Area Transit and was cherished amongst her co-workers and passengers. Those who knew Shirley will miss her big smile and her even bigger heart, but we will always be comforted by the great memories she left behind. Shirley is survived by her son Jonathan Birk, daughter-in-law Nina Birk, grandson Jackson Birk, and longtime companion Oliver Harris. A celebration of her life will be held on March 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road.
