WAYNE SOPPELAND

WAYNE ALLEN SOPPELAND Wayne Allen Soppeland, 70, passed away due to a heart attack in his adopted community of San Clemente, Ecuador on February 13, 2013. Wayne, born December 7, 1942 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, married his high school sweetheart Janet in December,1964. After he graduated from Stout State University and Jan from Wisconsin State, Eau Claire, they moved to Los Angeles to begin their careers with LAUSD, teaching in the San Fernando Valley. Eventually, Wayne worked in downtown Los Angeles and Jan in Pasadena. Looking to return to his farming heritage, Wayne and Jan purchased an alfalfa ranch in Barstow, California in 1977. The following year, Wayne acquired his real estate license, following his passion of real estate, and eventually establishing Soppeland Commercial Real Estate. Wayne's love for Barstow was evident in his involvement with many organizations including the 4H Club, Barstow swim team, Junior Olympic Swimming Championships, YMCA Youth and Government, Main Street USA Car Show, Barstow to Kelso Train Project and the Chamber of Commerce, who recognized Wayne as Man of the Year in 2000, and Man of Continuous Service in 2002. Wayne realized his dream of living part time in Ecuador, from learning Spanish, forever expanding his network of friends from local Ecuadorians to international travelers, to restoring a beachfront home. Wayne was known for his tremendous spirit, generosity and professionalism, and a pillar of the community. He will be truly missed. Wayne is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet Soppeland, daughter Chris Lamoreaux and her husband Jason, daughter Robin Asher and her husband Luis, grand- children Colby, Austin, Ezra and Kyra, and his brothers LaVerne and David Soppeland. A memorial service will be held March 23, 2013 at 2pm at the Hampton Inn. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully recommends donations to the Barstow Boys and Girls Club.
