BRUCE KITCHEN 3/14/1937 - 12/31/2013 Bruce Kitchen, Hesperia's first elected mayor, passed away December 31, 2013, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley; two sons Michael Kitchen (special friend Carolyn); Matthew (Patti ) Kitchen; daughter Jennifer (Ross) Beckwith; step-daughters Connie Cunningham and Corrina Knudson; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; one sister Sharon (Glenn) McKenzie. Bruce was born in Southgate, CA March 14, 1937, where he enjoyed growing up in rural Riverside County, playing with friends in the orange groves, and hiking the hills above Riverside. Bruce attended the University of Southern California on a scholarship as an elite athlete in track and field. For many years, Bruce held the record in CIF for the quarter mile in track. He ran with some of the world's best, including both US and Canadian Olympians. Bruce's many personal and professional life experiences provided a unique tale to pass on to his children. He served as an LA County Sheriff Reserve Deputy; served 50 years as an Educator and/or School Administrator, working at both the local school district level and San Bernardino County School of Education level. He was the founding Principal of Serrano High School in Phelan, CA, and was also the founding Principal of Hesperia High School in Hesperia, CA. Adding to his resume was five years as a submarine commander at Disneyland. He supervised student teachers at both Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Fullerton; and was a major influence in a student teacher prep program called Cal State TEACH run through Cal State Fullerton. He touched many lives, and several individuals' prominent career successes were a direct result of Bruce's influence and guidance. To say he will be missed is an understatement. His life touched many. He considered himself fortunate to have lived such a full and blessed life. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents John C. and Edith Kitchen.
