ELMER LEE SUTTON, CMSgt USAF (Ret) Elmer passed away peacefully on Sept 5, 2012 at home surrounded by his family in Victorville, CA. He was 80 years old. He was born March 20, 1932 in Quitman, Georgia to Lee and Tommie Sutton. He joined the Air Force in 1951. He graduated at the top of his class as a Jet Aircraft Mechanic. His first duty station was at RAF Wethersfield, England working on F-84 Thunderjet aircraft. It was here where he met Patricia Kingsley-Johnson. They married in 1955 and just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on Sept 3rd. After a long and distinguished 27 year Air Force career where he was stationed at Cannon AFB, Clovis New Mexico (F-100 Super Saber); RAF Alconbury, England (RB-66 Destroyer); George AFB, Victorville, CA (F-4 Phantom II); Zweibrucken AFB, West Germany (RF-4C Phantom II) he retired in 1978 as Aircraft Maintenance Superintendent at Norton AFB, San Bernardino, CA after attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He saw wartime service in 1968-1969 at Da Nang AFB, Vietnam. He could not stay away from the Air Force, and returned to work at Rockwell International in Palmdale, CA where he helped build every B-1B Lancer bomber in existence. He then went to work for Tracor Flight Systems/BAE Systems in Mojave, CA turning his old fighters into Full-Scale Target Drones. Elmer 'retired' in 1999, and was continually called back by Tracor/BAE Systems for his expertise. He retired for good in 2003 after an aviation career that spanned 52 years. He was active at St. Hilary's Episcopal Church and the local Chief's club after retirement. Elmer is survived by his beloved wife Patricia; son Stephen, wife Ruthann and grandchildren Holly and Matthew of Ridgecrest, CA; daughter Tina, husband Johnny Lopez and grandchildren Jake and Jack of Victorville, CA; daughter Tracy, husband Paul Ackerman, Colonel USAF (Ret) and grandchildren Caitlyn and Nicole of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his father Lee, mother Tommie, sister Louise Bassford and brothers Melvin, Claude and Roland. Burial with Full Military Honors will take place at Riverside National Cemetery at 11:30am on 17 Sept, 2012.
