ROBERT HALDEMAN

Indianola

Robert Elmore Haldeman of Indianola, passed away on his 95th birthday at the Indianola Good Samaritan Home. Bob was born Feb 1, 1916 at home in Indianola to Harry and Laura (Mae) Haldeman. He was the last survivor of five sons, Donald, Frank, Robert, Richard, and James. On May 7, 1937 he married Arlene Mae Smith in Indianola and they celebrated their 72nd anniversary in May 2009.

Bob was appointed Warren County Deputy Clerk of District Court in 1941 and was Clerk of Court from 1943 to 1944 when at that time he was inducted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the attack transport the USS Hansford. He was at the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was honorably discharged in March 1946. He resumed his job as Warren County Deputy Clerk of Court and in 1948 was elected Warren County Auditor until 1954. At that time he was appointed Chief Juvenile Probation officer for the 5th Judicial District of Iowa. This position he held until his retirement in l981.

He served as the chairman for the Warren County Republican Party when Eisenhower ran for president. His love of politics lived on in his hobby of collecting hundreds upon hundreds of political buttons and memorabilia. He was also a numismatist and was always sharing his coin collections with his family. Bob was a member of the First Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. He was a charter member of the ROMEOS, a group of male friends who loved dining out each week at a different place. Bob always liked a good card game and until recently still played a competitive hand of duplicate bridge. Upon his retirement he started playing golf and enjoyed being a member of the Indianola Country Club. Members of his coffee clubs always enjoyed his sense of humor, reminiscing, and positive outlook on life.

He was a devoted and much loved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His wife, Arlene, passed away in 2009 and he is survived by two children; Sue Ann (Robert) Ahlstrand of Denver, CO and Stephen Haldeman (Ann) of St. Louis, MO. Also surviving are four grandchildren; Kelly Ahlstrand (Meghan) of Highlands Ranch, CO, Erik Ahlstrand (Melissa) of Denver, CO, Amy Young (Rich) of Richmond, VA and Jeremy Haldeman of Washington DC. His great-grandchildren include, Abigail, Hannah, and Madeleine of CO and McKenna and Evan of VA.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation with family will be one hour before the service with private burial to follow in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
