R. Kuhlman Obituary

R. G. "Bob" Kuhlman

Clive

Robert George Kuhlman, 88, passed into new life on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Avenue in West Des Moines with burial following at Glendale Cemetery.

Bob was born in Des Moines, IA on March 20, 1925, to Fred and Pauline Kuhlman. He attended parochial grade school and he graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served until April 1945 when he was injured during an offensive march near Hamburg, Germany. He received the Purple Heart among other medals.

He married Angela Dillon in July 1947. He attended the University of Iowa then transferred to Drake, graduating in 1949. He was a devoted Catholic, active in the church, lecturing, singing in the choir, and was privileged to receive communion from Pope John Paul II at Living History Farms.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, and American Legion. Bob worked many years for local newspapers and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He loved playing golf and cards. Bob was an avid Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Bob's greatest enjoyment was his family and their many gatherings. He will be missed by his wife of 66 years, Angela; his children, Mary Pat (Kevin) Hurley, Jim (Dana), Greg (Debi), Margaret (Kevin) Lambi, Laure Guisinger, Dan (Maria), Janette (Kenny) Nielsen, Diane (Rick) Rinehart, and Kerri (Ben) Leu; 23 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and half-sister, Ethel Pound. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Pauline; daughter, Nancy; granddaughter, Ashley; son-in-law, Jim Guisinger; and brother, Fritz.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m., with an 8 p.m. Vigil Service, on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dowling Catholic High School, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or a charity of your choice. Online condolences are welcomed at IlesCares.com.

Such a wonderful gain for those waiting in heaven. A loss for those of us left behind. I know Bob will be singing with the choir.

I worked with Bob in the mid 70's at BCBS and he was such a nice person. Even though I have not seen him since quitting BCBS, I still remember him. My heart goes out to all the family.

Even though I was a smelly pig farmer from Southeast Polk...Bob was always so nice to me. He was a wonderful role model, and a very loving husband and father. God bless the Kuhlman family.
