Dean Briley, 90, died April 29, 2013, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 3, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.
Dean Albert Briley was born near Alleman in Polk County on August 16, 1922, the son of Boston and Bessie (Sutton) Briley. On December 31, 1942, Dean married Lucille Judge in Boone. He served with the Navy during World War II
. Dean was employed by the Fort Dodge, Des Moines, and Southern Railway for 27 years. He then worked for the George A. Rolfes Company and then was the Executive Secretary to the Iowa State Commerce Commission for seven years. He retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railway in 1982.
Dean was active with the Boone City Parks Commission and Foundation and was one of the founders of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad where he was involved on a daily basis. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by a son Dave (Cindy) Briley of Boone; two daughters Catherine Addy and Anne (Bill) Gilleney of Boone; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Margaret Briley, Charlotte Sawyer, Susan Lawler, Mary Martin, and Clare Lager; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone on Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. and then at the Church from 6 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. until noon.
In memory of Dean, memorials may be directed to the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.
