DEAN MILLS BOWER
Dean Mills Bower passed away on April 9, 2013 at 6 p.m. with his two children and wife right by his side. God wrapped his loving arms around him and lifted him peacefully to Heaven. He battled lung cancer with great strength and dignity for nine years. The last years he lived have been a gift from God. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 13, 2013 and visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2013 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Dean was born October 9, 1930 in Bridgewater, IA to Leroy and Alice Bower. He was the fourth child of eleven children. He graduated in 1948 from Bridgewater High School and then entered the United States Air Force
during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, he started work as an apprentice in the sheet metal trade in Des Moines, working for Waldinger Corporation for 20 years and then the Des Moines Independent School District. He has been a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #45 for 60 years; he worked the trade for 42 years. He belonged to Warren County Legion Post #165. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, had many friends in all walks of life and could visit with anyone he met.
Dean was united in marriage with LaVonne Volz in Stuart, IA. They have lived in Indianola since 1959. Two daughters were born to this marriage. Dean was a man of great kindness and held his family and friends as treasurers of his life. Having spent a lifetime of happiness with Dean, we as a family consider ourselves lucky to have had the pleasure to live our life with such a wonderful person. He loved being a Father and Grandpa. He was his grandchildren's super hero.
He leaves to cherish his memory, LaVonne, his loving wife of almost 60 years; daughters, Diane of Urbandale and Denise of Beaverton, OR, grandchildren, Matthew McKibben of Des Moines and Nicole Cronauer of Portland, OR. Dean was preceded in death by his parents LeRoy and Alice Bower, and his brother Bill. He is survived by four sisters, Mary Dennis of CA, Margaret (Gene) Shea of ID, Mardelle (Gary) Marks of CA and Marcia (Walt) Matlock of Des Moines; five brothers, Don of GA, Jerry (Joan) of TX, Patrick (Diane), Anita and Tom (Carol) all of Indianola, David (Darlene) of Pella; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He will be remembered by all who knew him, especially by his family who will never forget him.
