Donna Elaine (Allen) Smitley
Donna Allen Smitley, 69, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, March 10, 2014, after her courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines.
Donna was the second child of Albert "Bob" and Fernanda "Fayre" Allen, and was born on June 13, 1944. She graduated from Woodward High School in 1962.
Donna married Norman Sandhorst in 1965 and had two children, Allen and Leslie. She later divorced. In 1981, Donna married Al Smitley, and they made their home in Granger, while her children were in school and later moved to Urbandale. She was employed at Veenstra & Kimm as an Administrative Assistant to the President until her retirement in June of 2013. Donna was an active member of Lutheran Church of Hope, participating on the Usher and Communion Teams. She loved to shop at Von Maur and for her next pair of favorite shoes. Donna often spent time antiquing with friends and family for just the right item to add to her collection.
Donna's real passion was her family and the time she spent with them.
Donna is survived by her husband Al and her two children: Allen Smitley and Leslie (Theodore) Allen-Monago of Urbandale; two step-children Doug (Sharon) Smitley of Waukee and Lori (Dan) Hagen of Van Meter; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, father and mother, and a brother.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Iles-Westover Chapel.
