Gary Dean Shine
Gary Shine, 57, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, FL. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3 p.m. Monday at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines.
Gary was born in Grinnell, Iowa the son of Harlan and Rose (Bogard) Shine. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. He began his career with Midwest Lumber and Millwork, where he worked for 11 years. He ended his career after founding and growing three successful businesses with his wife: Shine Construction Services Inc., Shine Development LLC, and Consulting by Shine LLC. He retired at the young age of 52 and enjoyed the past five years as a snow bird in Florida in the winter, and played golf with his friends in the summer. Gary and his wife loved the warmth and palm trees so much that they purchased a home in Winter Garden, FL, allowing them to be closer to their two daughters and grand-daughter.
Gary loved spending time with his family, being at the beach, working on pet projects around the house, watching the sunset, and golfing with his friends. Gary felt his greatest accomplishments were growing successful businesses and raising two incredible daughters. He took great pleasure in playing with his grand-daughter, Ava Shine Larue.
Gary was a member of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce, Urbandale Golf & Country Club, Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, and the Des Moines Home Builders Association.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; two daughters, Christina (Tina) and husband, David Larue of Orlando, FL, and Emily Shine of Tampa, FL; granddaughter, Ava Larue; mother, Rose Shine of Conrad, IA; brother, Greg (Brenda) Shine of Conrad, IA; and 16 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
