Greer Headrick, 70, died peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, following a year and a half battle with prostate cancer. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Iles-Westover Chapel. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.
Greer was born in Knoxville, TN, and raised in Barberton, OH. He started his career with Firestone in Akron, OH in housekeeping. Greer worked his way onto the line and became a Union Steward, transferred to Des Moines in 1978, became a department foreman, retired in 1999 after 35 years with them. Throughout his life he had a passion for hotrods, cars, motorcycles and anything with wheels. Greer also loved coaching little league baseball in both Barberton and Ankeny. He was a member and Deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Greer was an avid fan of the Barberton Magics and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Greer is survived by his wife and best friend of 30 years, Jane; his children, Michele (Ricky) Oliver of Lowell, MA and Robert (Heather Hart) Headrick of Barberton, OH; his grandchildren, Kendrea, Alex, Riley, Bailey and Hope; three great-granddaughters, and his sister, Mary Headrick of E. TN. He was preceded in death by his son John Headrick and his parents Ruby and Marshall "Dude" Headrick.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday at Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Good Samaritan Fund at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com
