James Harry Gritton
James Harry Gritton, 84, passed away on April 5, 2013 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, at 2 p.m. with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. Burial with military honors will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.
James was born on February 7, 1929 to John Earl and Elva Viola (McChesney) Gritton in Des Moines, IA. James graduated from East High School, Drake University with a Bachelor of Arts and Law School, the University of CO with a Masters of Library Sciences. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. James worked for the Des Moines Public Library, Gritton and Gritton Law Firm, the University of Oregon and the University of Iowa
Law Libraries, the State of Iowa Judge Advocacy Office, and retired as the Head of the State of Iowa Law Library.
James's involvement in the community included Union Park United Methodist Church, American Legion, Mensa, Masonic Lodge, American Bar Association, and Embroidery Guild of America.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles Emerson Gritton, his sister, Nancy Elizabeth (Gritton) and brother-in-law, Thomas Marion Davidson. He leaves behind a sister-in-law, Hazel D. Gritton, nieces, Barbara Jo (Gritton) Walker and family, Cheryl Elizabeth Gritton and family, Fawn Elizabeth Davidson, a nephew, Andrew Thomas Davidson and family, and many relatives and friends.
