Jeanne Lewis, 87, of Des Moines, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital due to respiratory failure. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8 at Iles Funeral Homes - Grandview Park Chapel.
Jeanne was born on January 28, 1926, in Carlisle, IA, one of the six children of the late Ira and Mabel Leslie. She owned several east side restaurants including Jeanne's Café, Crystal Palace and the Busy B. She was the first woman cab driver in Des Moines and was the owner/operator of a fleet of cabs for 50 years. She enjoyed horseback and motorcycle riding. She was an avid Morel mushroom hunter and photographer. She will be remembered for her generous, caring spirit.
Jeanne loved her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jeanne Cowger; son, Tommy (Patti) Lewis; seven grandchildren, Joseph and Tony Rulli, Lori Edwards, Missy and Jennifer Cowger, Sarah (Pete) Gumina and Matthew Lewis; eight great-grandchildren, Ashley, Lisa, Jeanne, Taylor and Kylie Edwards, Jon Cowger, Angela (Daniel) Romero and Leo Gumina; and great-great-grandchildren, Daniel Romero and Alexis Meza Guerrero.
She was preceded in death by son-in-law, Dale Cowger; great-grandson, Douglas Edwards; four sisters; and one brother.
