Jim McCollum, 95, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11 at First Christian Church, 25th and University.
James Shumard McCollum was born October 22, 1918, in Sigourney, IA to Roy Victor and Della Shumard McCollum. Jim attended elementary school in Oskaloosa and later at Hubbell in Des Moines. He started high school at Des Moines Roosevelt but graduated from City High in Iowa City. He received his B.A. and M.S. in actuarial science from the University of Iowa
. Jim was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi national honorary societies.
Jim began working at Bankers Life, later the Principal Financial Group, on July 15, 1940. Doris Youngberg also started that same day in the same office and two years later on July 18, 1942, they married. Jim was drafted into the Army Air Corps on May 1,1941, and was stationed at Camp Dodge. He attended OCS at Ft. Washington, Maryland and was later assigned to a reception center in Miami Beach until the end of WWII
. Jim and Doris returned to Des Moines in 1946 where Jim continued working as an underwriter at Bankers Life. Jim retired in 1983 as Vice President responsible for the Underwriting and Issue Departments, the Medical Department, and Policy Owners Services. Jim was affiliated with local, state, and national home office life underwriters associations over the years. He was a past president of the Iowa Home Office Life Underwriters Club.
Jim was a member of University Christian Church, later First Christian Church, and served over 30 years as a deacon. He enjoyed playing golf, camping, gardening, and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports. Doris and Jim traveled all over the world to such places as Sweden, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, China, New Zealand, and Japan. Jim was meticulous about record keeping and compiled extensive files on Shumard and McCollum genealogy. He was an excellent bridge player and won more than his fair share of card games. Above all, he was a good father.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, in 2000. He is survived by his son, Craig (Belle) McCollum of Monticello, Florida; daughters, Lonis McCollum and Janis Hosemann of Des Moines, and Diana (Richard) Brumfield of Liberty, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Harold; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations can be made in Jim's memory to First Christian Church or the Down Syndrome Association of Houston.
