John George Patramanis

John George Patramanis of Des Moines, IA departed peacefully on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the age of 72 with his family by his side.

John is survived by his faithful wife Georgia of 39 years, loving daughters Christina (James Caldwell) and Maria Patramanis, brother Mike (Vickie) Patramanis, nephews, nieces and other caring relatives.

John, a first generation Cretan-American, was born in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1941. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George and Afrodite Patramanis, and brother, baby Patramanis.

A man of learning and knowledge, John received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Coe College and attended a year of Law School at the University of Iowa before transitioning to Drake University where he attained his Master's Degree in Economics.

John proudly served the State of Iowa for 37 years as Bureau Chief for Division of Labor Services. He managed the Research and Statistics Section, the Elevator, Boiler and Amusement Ride Inspections Sections and Iowa OSHA.

A very devoted servant of the Greek Orthodox faith, John was involved in the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George in many capacities including the church board, of which he held the office of President for several years.

John was also an honored and active member of AHEPA, a Greek-American philanthropic organization. He served as Treasurer for Des Moines Chapter #192 and was an Executive Committee member of the AHEPA National Housing Corporation, Inc. Board of Directors. He recently received the award of Ahepan of the Year for the Grainfield District #14.

Completing his other many great works and roles in this life, John found satisfaction and goodness as a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shrine.

John's love of life, his family and friends, beauty and knowledge was truly inspiring. He found the sacred in every detail of this world and he imparted wisdom, patience and understanding to all he met. He will truly be missed. We will love him always as he continues his great journey through the Universe.

Visitation services will be held at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel in Des Moines on Thursday, July 4 from 5 to 6 p.m., with a Trisagion service to follow at 6 p.m.

On Friday, July 5, the funeral will begin at 10 a.m. at Greek Orthodox Church of St. George with burial to follow at Des Moines Masonic Cemetery. Before the funeral, there will be a Masonic ceremony at 9 a.m. at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel.
