John Gerald Walker, 94 of Indianola passed away on Friday, January 3rd at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 8 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Interment will be in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
John was born November 19, 1919 in White Oak Township, Warren County, IA to Walter M. and Flora (McCroby) Walker. He was a lifelong resident of Warren County and a graduate of Martensdale High School. In 1943 he married Hazel Lockwood.
John was an avid conservationist, winning state and local awards for his work saving and improving his farms. He took pride in his cow herd and got satisfaction from raising and feeding his cattle to market. He farmed for over 60 years and continued to work on his farm projects even after "retirement".
In 1977 he married Twyla Blake. They enjoyed wintering in Texas, square dancing, playing cards and visiting with friends. They were also blessed with a wonderful group in Indianola friends.
John is survived by his children, Dennis (Michele) of Red Oak, Jane (Mike) of Omaha, Bev of Altoona; step-son, Mike (Sheila) of Indianola; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Flora; wife, Hazel; wife, Twyla; brothers, Paul, Chester and Harold; and sisters, Margaret and Almeda.
Visitation will be held at the Indianola First United Methodist Church from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, January 7 with the family being present from 5 to 7p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Temple of God Church. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com
