Maureen J. (Begley) Tiffany, 66, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Unity Point Medical Center following a five month battle with abdominal cancer.
Maureen was born in Des Moines, IA, on March 16, 1947, to Mildred G. (Johnson) and John J. Begley. She grew up in West Des Moines, attending Sacred Heart School and then graduating from Saint Joseph Academy in 1965. She attended Iowa State University her freshman year of college, and then transferred to the University of Iowa
, where she graduated in 1970. She later earned her Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) in 1986, also from the University of Iowa. On September 7, 1968, Maureen married Bill Tiffany in Des Moines, just prior to their senior year in college. Following college Maureen embarked on a life-long career in social work, including employment at both the Iowa and Polk County Departments of Human Services. During her early child-rearing days, she was self-employed performing private adoption and custody investigations. In 1985, following an internship for her Masters Degree, she accepted full-time employment at United Way of Central Iowa, leading to a 27-year career with that organization. The last several years of her career were devoted to Early Childhood Initiatives, working with educators, healthcare officials, and many others in the central Iowa community. She recently retired from United Way on November 15, 2012.
Maureen is survived by her husband, Bill and their three children, Kevin (Jennifer Kluza) Tiffany, John (Laura Martino) Tiffany, both of Des Moines, and Mary Cownie (Peter) of West Des Moines. Maureen loved her four grandchildren, Elizabeth "Lizzy" and Grant Tiffany, ages 4 and 2, John Henry "JH" Cownie, age 1, and Mary Grace "Gracie" Tiffany, 3 months. She is also survived by her brother, John (Sara) of Adel and sister, Kathy Sluyter (Ray) of Jefferson City, MO. She was also loved by many cousins from her father's side of the family, and the many nieces and nephews from her brother and sister. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mildred Begley.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27, at Iles Dunn's Chapel. A celebration of Maureen's life will be held at Saint Augustin Church at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 28, with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
