Peter J. Flynn, Sr., 86, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday December 2nd at St. Ambrose Cathedral, where he was a member, with private interment at Glendale Cemetery.

Mr. Flynn was born in Des Moines, the son of Roy and Margaret Flynn, and lived here all his life. He graduated from Holy Cross College, Worcester, MA in 1949 and was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army. After a two-year tour of duty, Flynn started his advertising career at Lessing Advertising Co., Inc. (now Lessing-Flynn) in 1952, resigning as Executive Vice President in 1981 to establish his own company with his son, Peter, Jr., The Flynn Advertising Agency. In 1984, he merged with Celia Wright Advertising, Ltd. to form Flynn Wright, Inc. where he served as Chairman and CEO and Chairman Emeritus.

Mr. Flynn was past president of the Des Moines Advertising Club (now Ad Pros of Des Moines), the Boys Club of Des Moines (now The Boys and Girls Club), the Des Moines Convention Bureau (now Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau), and was a past board member of the Youth Homes of Mid-America which awarded him a Friend of Youth award a few years ago.

In 1999, Mr. Flynn received the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal, the highest award given annually by the Ad Pros of Des Moines in "recognition of his outstanding contributions to advertising and furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern." In 2000, he was named an "Ageless Hero" in the business category by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Mr. Flynn was an honorary lifetime member of the Ad Pros of Des Moines and the Knights of Columbus, a current member of the Des Moines Civic Center and the Serra Club, President of the St. Ambrose Religious Parrish Vocations Committee and a former member of the Des Moines Rotary Club, Wakonda Club and the Breakfast Club, Ltd. He enjoyed writing odes, golfing and yard work, but mostly enjoyed spending time with his wife of nearly 63 years, Joan, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Flynn is survived by his wife, Joan; three sons, Peter, Jr. (Nancy) of Johnston, Jeffrey (Pamela) of Waukee and Andrew (Linda Shevlin) of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Rosemary of Des Moines; one daughter, Mary Sarah of West Des Moines; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Margaret; son Paul; and siblings, Mary Jane Flynn, Connor Flynn, Judy Rasmussen and Susan LaHatte.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 1 at Iles Dunn's Chapel with a rosary at 4 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Cathedral, Progress Industries or the Youth Homes of Mid-America.
