Philip Papich


Philip A. "Nonny" Papich, age 84 of Albia, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at The Monroe County Hospital in Albia under the care of Hospice of Monroe County.

Nonny was born on November 16, 1929. He grew up and attended school in Lovilia and Albia. He joined the United States Army in May 1946 where he was trained in radar mechanics. He honorably served until 1950. Nonny had a diversified career, mostly working in the military aircraft field through the U.S. and overseas.

Nonny was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was known for the care giving of his mother, aunts and cousin. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and playing cards at the American Legion.

Nonny is survived by a son, Bruce (Cindy) Papich of Denver, CO; a grandson, Shane Papich, also from Colorado; a sister, Francine Gansman of Chandler, IN; a niece, Julie (Mike) Scieszinski of Albia; special cousins, Connie Sinnott and Mick Papich both of Albia; as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Stephana Papich Larson; and his dear companion of more than 20 years, Marcella Haluska.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 13th, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia; with Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Albia with military rites provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia, and Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 12th, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Nonny's family present from 4 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be led by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society at 4:30 p.m., with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or to the American Legion both of Albia.
