Raymond L. Maurer

Raymond L. Maurer was born April 7, 1918 in Spencer, Iowa. He spent his childhood years in Spencer until his father, Anicet passed away unexpectedly. After a period of time in Sigourney, Ray and his mother, Rose moved to Des Moines in 1931. Ray graduated from Dowling High School and attended the University of Iowa
, earning a BA degree followed by a year of post-graduate work. It was during these years that Ray developed his life-long love for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was fortunate to be at Iowa during the years of the Iron Men football team with Nile Kinnick.
Ray enlisted in the Army
in 1941. He served in the Army Finance Department, attached to the Air Force and attained the rank of Captain. After the war, Ray returned to Des Moines where he met his future wife, Mary Angela Heartney. They were married on August 9, 1947.
Ray worked for many years in the insurance industry, primarily with Central Life Assurance Company where he was employed for 34 years as an Actuarial Assistant. He retired in 1980. Ray most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved working outside, taking walks and riding his bicycle. Ray was an avid reader. He looked after his mother who lived independently until her early 90's when she entered the Bishop Drumm Care Center. She resided there until her death in 1997, shortly before her 109th birthday.
Sadly, Mary Angela passed away in 1993. Ray moved to St. Andrew Apartments in Urbandale where he met his second wife, Florence Gipple. They were married in 1995. They moved to The Reserve, where they resided until 2011. Due to health issues Ray moved to Arbor Springs, where he received excellent care until his death. Florence is currently residing at Edgewater in West Des Moines.
Ray is survived by his wife, Florence Gipple; daughter, Anne Sopher (John) of Coralville; son, John Maurer (Carolyn) of Grand Rapids, MI.; grandchildren, Sarah McDougall (Bryan), Carrie Sopher (Jason Barrett), Karen Gorr (Eric), Lisa Maurer, Tim Maurer and Kristin Maurer; step grandchildren, Meredith McDonald (Chris) and Chris Gipple; great grandchildren, Simon Barrett and Elizabeth Gorr and foster great grandchildren, Luis Diaz and Angel Scales. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary Angela and a step son, Ron Gipple.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2013 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Dowling High School or Hospice of Central Iowa.
