Richard A. Kern

Richard A. Kern, of West Des Moines died December 1, 2012 at Ramsey Village of Alzheimer's Disease. A life-long resident of Des Moines, Dick was born to George A. and Hazle Plummer Kern on Jan. 6th, 1927. He attended St. Augustine church and grade school and graduated from Roosevelt High School in mid-year, 1945. He then joined the Navy serving until discharge at war's end. He attended Georgetown University for four years. After graduation he enrolled in Creighton University, earning his law degree. His career was in the insurance business in which he spent 40 years with Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. He was active in JC's and had served as president of the Des Moines chapter.
Dick is survived by his wife, Dorothy, who he married July 16, 1956 in Des Moines one son, John Kern and wife Barbara of Barrington, Illinois, three granddaughters, Katherine, Margaret, and Elizabeth of Barrington.
Preceding him in death were his sister, Marilyn, step-daughter, Catherine Peterson, brother-in-law, Jack Foley, brother and sister-in-laws, Jean and Bruce Vaughan.
All his life Dick loved hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking, his church, the Republicans, and the Hawkeyes. May he rest in peace.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday , December 5, 2012 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior to service time, and burial will be in Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Augustine Catholic Church or the Alzhiemer's Association.
