richard lee "dick" moore
Richard "Dick" Moore, 82, passed away on January 17, 2013 in Mesa, Arizona. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Mearick and Muriel Moore on April 23, 1930. He grew up in rural Michigan and graduated from Howard City Community Schools. He attended Alma College in Michigan and graduated in 1953. Thereafter, in 1958, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in the field of Education at the University of Michigan
. Dick also did graduate work at Drake University and the University of Colorado in the fields of microbiology and ecology. He taught science at Atherton High School in Flint, Michigan and then at Hoover High School from 1969, until he retired in 1992.
In 1950, Dick married Lois Paulen, and together they had five wonderful (in his words) children. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and son-in-law, Jerrold Wanek. He is survived by his wife, Roberta who has been his companion for more than thirty years. He is also survived by his older brother, Max Moore, and his five children, Christine and husband Howard Gum, James and wife Kija Moore, Sherry and husband Michael Wallis, Carolyn Wanek, John and wife Cathy Moore; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Richard was an avid traveler. During his life he traveled to Japan, Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, Alaska and throughout Europe. He was also an accomplished and skilled home builder who built many beautiful homes in Iowa, Arizona, and Michigan.
A memorial service will be held in Des Moines at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (2600 E. Euclid, 50317) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9. Memorial contributions can be made to www.NationalParksConservation.org
