Zuma E. "Betty" Heggen

Zuma E. "Betty" Heggen, long time resident of Ames, died Sunday, December 3rd at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Betty was born July 9th, 1925. She was the daughter of Zuma Wilson and stepfather Wayne Wilson.

Betty graduated from Ames High School and attended Iowa State University. She worked in Washington D.C. during World War II and later returned to Ames and worked for the Department of Transportation. She married Theodore B. Heggen and raised two daughters, Jane and Judy Heggen.

Betty was an avid reader and a formidable bridge player. She was self taught at needle point and counted cross stitch producing numerous pieces that were literally pieces of art. She will be remembered for a quiet sense of humor that was present regardless of the circumstances surrounding her.

Betty is survived by her daughter Judy and son-in-law Bruce Espe, grandchildren Keeta and Seth (Kathryn), great grandchildren Jenna and Oliver, her brother William Clarke and his daughters Chris, Connie and Cathy.

She also loved and will be missed by her "extended family/friends" Curt Olson, Bruce and Brenda Gartin and their children, and Leyda Knapp.

She was preceded in death by her parents Zuma and Wayne, her much loved daughter Jane, and beloved aunt Francis Butler.

A memorial service at the graveside in Ames will be in the spring time.

With so many in need during this Holiday Season, please take a moment to give to in memory of Betty.
