LaKeisha Evette Scroggins, 39, was born July 28, 1974 in Fort Worth, Texas. She passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

LaKeisha is survived by her mother, Vera Scroggins; father, Clarence Scroggins; brother, Lawrence (Laura) Scroggins; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and two uncles.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2014 at Union Park Baptist Church, 821 Arthur Ave. with burial to follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

I took care of Lakeisha while she was in Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Mercy during the onset of her initial illness and prognosis. While I only new Lakeisha for a short time I felt close to her. She was the same age as me and of similiar experience. I to served in the Navy and I enjoyed reminiscing with her about our service. We shared sea stories. In reflection of her past and current medical history of illness I found Lakeisha to be profoundly courageous and gracious. She taught me hope and a possitive attitude can be a powerful thing. From my perspective as a care giver, patients will always come and go, but some just stay with you a little longer. I often thought of Lakeisha after her move from Intensive Care and am saddened to hear of her passing, but I smile when I think of her still. I am blessed to have known her and send my deepest respects and love to her family and those that new her best.
