Barbara DeHaven Obituary

Barbara Hoskin DeHaven died Thursday, October 21.
Barbara (Barb) was born August 14, 1929, in Akron, Ohio and graduated from Hiram College in 1951. She graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and served as a physician in Haiti and India with the United Christian Missionary Society with her husband, Tom. On returning home, the family resettled in Kentucky where she served as public health officer for the Carroll County Public Health Department. Later she was chosen to help develop the Three Rivers District Health Department in Kentucky and continue as its medical director. After moving to Des Moines in 1982 she became medical director for Planned Parenthood of Central Iowa. She earned a master's degree in library science from the University of Iowa in 1991. She then combined her love of research and lifelong learning with her medical background to become the first-ever medical librarian at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Barb was an avid genealogist. She had a great love for history, baseball, and most of all, her family. In addition to being intelligent and strong, she was sweet, caring and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Barb was a member of First Christian Church.
Barb married E. Thomas (Tom) DeHaven in 1955. She is survived by two children Steve (Jane) DeHaven and Cathy (Dave) DeHaven Swanson; daughter-in law Karen DeHaven; and 6 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, son Matt, her parents and brothers.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church in Des Moines with visitation Thursday, October 28, 5 to 7 p.m., also at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be allocated to First Christian Church and Jackman Memorial Hospital in India.
