Buris Ortis Avise, 97, of Des Moines, died on Friday, September 7, 2012, at Ramsey Village. The son of (Levi) Fred and Louise (Moser) Avise, Buris was born on June 28, 1915, in Des Moines. Buris graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1934 and was one of the fastest sprinters in the state. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Africa and Italy theaters during World War II and married Rosemary Lowther on May 19, 1945, at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines. He resided at 3801 Grand for the last nine years.
Buris was a natural salesman who worked as a hardware consultant until his retirement. He was proud of attaining the designation of AHC (Architectural Hardware Consultant). He had a great smile, a welcoming laugh, loved people and never complained. Buris had a gift for friendship and loved helping people. He had volunteered thousands of hours at Mercy Hospital. Above all, Buris loved his family dearly.
He is survived by three children, Michael (Mary Ellen) Avise, of Ames, Anne Avise, of Windsor Heights, and Mary Avise, of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Brian, Shawn and Nick; and eight great-grandchildren, Allyson, Morgan, Jerilyn, Brock, Angie, Tanner, Kiyla and Bryce.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary, and an infant daughter, Theresa.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012, at St. Augustin Catholic Church. Burial with military honors in Glendale Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to Mass.
