Edward J. Ramirez, 76, passed away peacefully at Taylor House, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. His family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, November 7 at Iles Funeral Homes - Grandview Park Chapel. A Vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Military honors will follow the service. Private burial will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Ed was born August 16, 1937 in Valley Junction, Iowa the son of Martin and Irene (Zermeno) Ramirez. Known to his friends as "Big Ed" he graduated from Valley High School. Ed served in the US Air Force from 1956 to 1962. On April 27, 1963 he was united in marriage to Mary L. Bolten and they made their home in Des Moines. Ed worked for Meredith Publishing for 29 years as a book binder and was a proud union member. Ed was a member of the Bellizzi MacRae American Legion and St. Anthony Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time in his garage with his tools and spending time with his friends and family.
Ed is survived by his children, Christine (Mark) Sarcone of Ankeny, Dan (Kandy) Ramirez, Karen (Brian) Tallman and Thomas (Angie) Ramirez, all of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Nicole and Jordan Ramirez and Jade Tallman; sister, Dee Van Horne and two brothers, Gene and Richard (Carol) Ramirez. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and his parents.
