Emma Sutherland, 93, passed away on January 16, 2013 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. A memorial service will be held Monday, January 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Indianola, Iowa. Emma was born on January 17, 1919 near Motor, Iowa to William Gaylord and Ethel Brown. She was a graduate of Beech High School. Emma married Robert Newell Sutherland on December 3rd, 1937. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter.
Emma loved life and her family. She retired from Simpson College after 33 years of service. Emma also clerked at the Cottage Inn for six years.
She is survived by her daughter, Rena Wilson; four grandchildren, Katherine (Kit) Brown, Robert (Katie) Wilson, Christopher (Dania Schuler) Wilson, Edward (Kara) Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Brown, Scarlett Brown and Lucy Wilson; nieces Sandra (Dick) Thomas, Jeri Lou Lytton, Marsha (Bob) Rust, Joy Sutherland; nephews Van (Hazel) Sutherland and Kent Sutherland; plus many more friends and extended family. Emma was preceded in death by her husband Newell and son-in-law George (Pick) Wilson III.
A celebration honoring her life will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Indianola, Iowa.
