Harold Carl Luke, 83, of Woodward passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospice in Johnston on March 5, 2013. He was born on May 30, 1929 in Aurora, IL, the son of Willie Arthur and Allie Inez (Williams) Luke. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1948. Ben, as he was known by family and friends, was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart Inez Rhoads on May 28, 1950 at the Woodward Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born, Terry and David. He served with the 142nd division in the Army from 1952-1953 during the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Star, serving his country and was honorably discharged with rank of Sgt. 1st Class. Ben was a self-employed general contractor (Luke and Spenla), building homes, churches, nursing homes and many familiar buildings to all of us. To name a few, he built St. John Catholic Church in Ogden, the Methodist Churches in Woodward and Perry, the United Community Schools, Farm Production Service, and built additions to the Perry Nursing Home and the Adel County Care Facility. He also built and owned the nursing home in Ogden. Ben was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, taxidermy, traveling and his grandchildren. For 37 years he, his two sons, and friends fished the waters of Canada. Ben had a way of making any who accompanied him into avid fishermen! He was a member of the Crossroads Church in Perry, was a Past Master of Peaceful Masonic Lodge and Worthy Patron of Eastern Star. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, his infant brother, Willie Arthur Jr. and his infant sister, Georgia June. He is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Inez, his sons Terry (Cindy) and David (Joyce) of Woodward, his sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Leland Godwin of Perry, eight grandchildren: Jeff Luke (Joy) of Earlham; Cody Wilson (Mary Kay) of Rogerville, MO; Janelle Buccino (Mike) of Steamboat Springs, CO; Teresa Gillian (Jerry) of Bouton; Brandon Luke of Ankeny; Dana Luke of Ankeny; LeRoy Cunningham (Kristi) of Pleasant Hill; and Giget Showers (Duane) of Chariton; and 15 great grandchildren: Hannah Downey; Blake and Brooke Wilson; Alexandria and Gabriel Anderlik; Rachel Luke; Cody and Cael Cunningham; Dylan, Allyson, Madison and Curt Showers; and Michael, Anya, and Grayson Buccino. Ben donated his body to science to the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. A memorial and graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mercy Hospice Home of Johnston in Ben's name and may be left at the funeral home. We would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hospice for the excellent, loving care he received during his illness. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements.
