Herndon Polk Hippee, 85, of Des Moines, IA, died Tuesday July 16, at Wesley Health Center, in Des Moines, of congestive heart failure.
Herndon, a member of a pioneer Des Moines family, was born December 31, 1927, to Herndon Page Hippee and Marguerite Borgmeyer. A life long Des Moines area resident, Herndon was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Drake University, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Herndon enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 during the Korean War and served in the Strategic Air Command in Austin, TX. He married Martha Jane Young in 1952, had three daughters, and lived near his childhood home for over 50 years.
He took great pleasure in being a salesman for The Des Moines Register, Cowles Mutual Readers League and Pigeon's Stores. His wonderful sense of humor endeared him to all.
He was an active member at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul where he served on the chapter, and especially enjoyed his work on the property committee, and the music academy. After his retirement in 1992, Herndon and Martha traveled throughout Europe and the British Isles, as well as the Western United States, especially OR, where two of their daughters currently reside. Herndon was a volunteer tutor for Life Options Program and board member of Scavo School as well as a member of the Pioneer Club in Des Moines.
Herndon also enjoyed building replica sailing ships. He painstakingly built many ships, among them the H.M.S. Victory, the Bluenose and the Flying Cloud. He then visited each of the original ships.
In recent years Herndon found immense joy from riding his three wheeled bike through his neighborhood and Water Works Park. These outings became a important part of his life.
Herndon is survived by his wife, Martha, his three children Susan Hippee Brennan (Travis), Sarah Hippee O'Grady (Patrick), Julia Herndon Hippee, as well five grandchildren, Marcella Baldwin, Nicholas Baldwin (Hannah), Erin Brennan, Sean Brennan, and Jack O'Grady, and one great-grandson Joseph Baldwin. Herndon was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers Charles Hippee, William Hippee and Barker Slade, and his sister Mary Rush. The family is forever thankful for the wonderful, loving care that Herndon was shown by the nurses and staff on the fourth floor cardiac unit at the Iowa Methodist Hospital.
He will be remembered by his family and countless friends and acquaintances, old and new.
A private family memorial service and inurnment was held in the Chapel at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chapel, and the Music Academy of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul.
