James David Dean, 89, of Waterloo, died Thursday at Covenant Medical Center.
He was born February 26, 1924, in Greenwood, S.C. the son of James and Dora Kates Dean. He married Betty Reynolds on August 30, 1945, in Omaha, NE. She died November 14, 1986.
James served in the United States Army with the military police until 1952. He was employed with Wonder Bread Bakery for 35 years, retiring May 6, 1984. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include: three sons: Lyle (Lei) of Dunkerton, Terrance (Vicki) of Des Moines, Richard (Kathy Hilby) of Waterloo; a daughter, Julie (Jimmy) Myer of Dows; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Louise Swisher of Detroit, MI.
Preceded in death by: four brothers, Carlton, Palmer, Lee and Fred Dean.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Full military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31. Public visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 2 p.m. Legion of Mary Rosary. Public visitation one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the family or Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.
