James Robert Smith, age 87, died April 6, 2011 in Olathe, KS. Memorial services are 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, with burial following at Leon Cemetery.
James grew up in Decatur County and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His career was in the Iowa State Patrol from 1947 until 1978, serving as the State Director of the Drivers License Division, then in the Public Safety Administration, and later at the State Patrol Headquarters. After retirement from the State Patrol, James worked for the State DCI until 1986.
Survivors include wife Ida of Olathe; daughter Phyllis Jean "PJ" Grove (Doug) of Olathe; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Sarah Buckingham (James) and Rosetta Buckingham of Leon.
Memorials may be given to the Iowa State Patrol Honor Guard.
