Johannes Van Arkel Obituary
Des Moines
Johannes "Joe" Van Arkel Jr., 80, was born May 21, 1934, to Helena and Johannes Van Arkel in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed on July 2, 2014.
Joe enjoyed woodworking, his swimming pool, gardening and his absolute passion was tennis; for which he just recently won gold in the Iowa Senior Games. He loved spending time with his family and being an Arizona Snowbird. Joe's favorite holiday was Christmas; he took great pride in decorating the house. The love he showed for his wife was endless and unconditional.
Joe is survived by his wife, Janice Van Arkel; children, Jeff Van Arkel Jim (Robbie) Van Arkel, Dennis (Pamela) Van Arkel, Dave Van Arkel, Kim (Ed) Helland, Rob Rhinehart, and Paula Baumeister, eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and an infant daughter.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends Sunday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dear Jan,
Alice and I are greatly saddened by Joe's death. We missed contacting you this winter and were planning to see you both in September while we are in Des Moines. We have lost a friend and very special person.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Joe who was a teammate at North High School. He was a quiet gentleman who gave you 100% in anything he would do. A consistently steady individual you could always count on to give you his best. Would only get to see Joe at class reunions or chance meetings but he will be greatly missed. My condolence and sympathy to the family.
