Joyce Evelyn (De Bruin) Dunham, 83, passed away Tuesday at Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Joyce was born in Kodaikanal, So. India on May 19, 1929, the daughter of Reformed Church missionaries, the late Rev. Cornie A. and Frances (Lepeltak) De Bruin. She attended boarding school in India and graduated from Central College at Pella where she met and married the late James W. Dunham in 1950. Together they embarked on a missionary journey of their own serving in the Arabian Gulf for over 30 years. Joyce home schooled their three children and they taught in the Arabian Mission of the Reformed Church in America. They overcame many hardships together and the challenges of living in a Muslim world miles away from family. Those left to carry on her legacy of faith are three children and their families: Nancy Dunham of Pella; Kamala and husband Ed Vroom of Pella and her two children: Clint Dingeman and Shauna of Knoxville, IA, Jessica Dingeman Silvey and Travis of Jacksonville, FL; John Dunham and wife, Marya, and their two children: Elizabeth and Mathew currently residing in New Dehli, India; Dan Dingeman of Knoxville, IA; and an Uncle Harold De Bruin of Oskaloosa, IA; along with many cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment to made in the Black Oak Cemetery near Pella. Memorials may be given for the Reformed Church in America Mission Services. Joyce always put others first and will be remembered for her quiet, grace filled walk with Christ, her strength and boundless love and compassion.
