Sister Leona Mary Manning 90 died Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston, IA. Services at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel are Monday, November 19: Rosary at 4 p.m.; Vigil at 7 p.m.
Visitation at Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave, Davenport, Tuesday, November 20: Rosary at 4:00; Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass, Wednesday, November 21, 11 a.m. in Magnificat Chapel. Burial follows in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Leona Elizabeth Manning was born February 4, 1922 to James and Mary Catherine Smith Manning in Granger, IA. On September 7, 1943, she entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, professing vows on July 17, 1946. She received a BA in Elementary Education from Marycrest College, an MS in Library Science from the University of Iowa.
Her ministry in elementary education in Iowa schools included Cosgrove, Ottumwa, Des Moines and Fort Madison. She also taught in Santa Paula, California and Great Falls, Montana. She served as a librarian at Gehlen High School in Le Mars and Dowling High School in Des Moines, finally in 1984 at Marycrest College, Davenport. She retired to the Humility of Mary Center in 2002 and then to Bishop Drumm in 2011, where she resided until her death.
Sister Leona Mary was preceded in death by parents, brothers James, Albert, Clement, Jack, Patrick and Robert, sisters Agnes, Catherine, Henrietta and Rose. She is survived by her sister Rita Hettich of Dousman, WI, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as Sisters and Associates of her CHM community.
