Manuel A. Murillo, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Methodist West Hospital. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Manuel was born and raised in Valley Junction, the son of Antonia and Ysidro Murillo. He graduated from Valley High School in 1946, served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and married Betty Galpin in 1953. He worked as a foreman for Monarch Cement Company before retiring after 36 years of service.
Manuel was a girls softball coach for many years in West Des Moines. He was an avid sports fan, especially of Dowling Catholic High School football. He enjoyed gardening and carpentry work and was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church. Manuel's family was the center of his life, especially his role as a grandfather.
Manuel is survived by three daughters, Cindi Murillo of Colfax, Cathy (John) Thilges of Cumming and Christy (Tom) Harmeyer of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Ashlen (Matt) Sheaffer of Urbandale, Jennifer Harmeyer of Des Moines and Natalie Thilges of Cumming; three great-grandchildren, Max, Harrison and Elizabeth Sheaffer; three sisters, Abbie Chia, Jane Bejarno and Mary Negrete; and two brothers, Abel Murillo and Mike (Mary) Murillo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jess and Tito; and his wife, Betty.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McLaren's Chapel with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.
