Merton Searcy, age 92, of Slater went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A time of visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Slater Baptist Church. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the church with burial to follow at Slater Municipal Cemetery.
Merton was born November 16, 1920, near Winston MO, the son of Cleo and Helen (Christensen) Searcy. He served in the Army in France and England early in WWII and was wed to Edna Mangel on February 3, 1946 in Abilene TX.
Retired after twenty-seven years from tool making at John Deere, Merton and his wife also ran Searcy Gardens in Sheldahl. He was an avid rock hound and enjoyed creating jewelry from his polished finds. He was a chapter leader of John Birch Society, a member of Slater American Legion Post 260 and charter member of Slater Baptist Church.
Merton was preceded in death by Edna in 2007; their daughter Karen Carroll; one brother Chris; and two sisters Carol Erskin, Corrinne Johnson. He is survived by his son David, Slater IA; two sisters Maxine Bechtel, Des Moines and Georgia Hammond, Phoenix AZ; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
