Richard Casady, 65, formerly of Des Moines, IA, passed peacefully away at home in Cumming, IA, on February 10, 2013. He was born in Texas City, TX May 8, 1947.
Richard was the second oldest of four children born to Gene and Simon Casady. He spent two years in the Air Force during the Viet Nam war.
Over the years he had owned a sporting goods store, a Ford dealership and sprint cars.
Some of his loves over the years included flying his plane, shooting his guns, traveling, and his pets which included cats, dogs, ducks, mice, fish, hermit crabs, a snapping turtle, a gecko and just about any other critter that would give him a chuckle. He was an avid reader and Usenet writer. His latest passion was his boat, "The Revenge" which he enjoyed on Big Spirit Lake in Iowa.
He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Des Moines and attended Iowa State University, Colorado State University and DMACC.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; stepson, Adam (Sherry) Casady; stepdaughter, Sarah Benton; sister, Betsy (Robert) Jenkins; brothers, Simon (Patricia) and Tim (Sara) Casady. He is also survived by father-in-law, William Shumaker Sr.; sister-in-law, Amy Shumaker; brother-in-law, Bill Shumaker; sister-in-law, Mary Springer, and brother-in-law, John (Rebecca) Shumaker; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; stepson, Aaron Benton; and nephew, Simon Casady.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2013 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Ankeny Iowa.
