Robert "Bob" Hansen

West Des Moines

Bob passed away peacefully Friday, December 7, 2012 at his home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where his family will begin greeting friends at 10. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Bob was born May 3, 1925 in Ogden, Iowa and graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. Following graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in the 381st Bomb Group based in Ridgewell, England. Bob worked as a switchman for Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and past member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved the Hawkeyes. Go Hawks!

Bob is survived by his son, Bobby (Mary) Hansen of West Des Moines; his two daughters, Chris (Alex) Oponski of Spirit Lake and Jackie (James) Lewis of Waukee; grandchildren: Mandy Lewis, Collin Donahue-Oponski, Bailey Hansen, Caitlin Oponski, Carly Hansen, Adam (Libbey) Lewis, Elly Hansen, Alexis Oponski, Drew Lewis; one great-grandchild, Nora Oponski; and his beloved extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 62 years, Darlene.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Dowling Catholic High School.
