While celebrating the holidays with his family in San Diego, Steve Yochum passed away on January 3, 2014
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, January 13, 2014 at St Teresa Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum. A Celebration of Life around 5:00 pm, Monday will be at the Windsor Heights Community and Events Center. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm, Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Iles Westover Chapel. A vigil service will follow at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Bank of Iowa in Steve's name.
Steve was a farm boy from Ottumwa, Iowa who moved to Des Moines in 1973 after marrying Mary Donahue, his high school sweetheart. From this union they produced their proudest accomplishment in life, their son Matt.
Steve was a Rehabilitation Evaluator for the State of Iowa, helping hundreds of disabled individuals receive training to reenter the work force. His curious and inquisitive nature led him to tweak the family fudge recipe into an award winning Iowa State Fair fudge.
Surviving Steve are his best friend and wife of 41 years Mary, his son Matthew, his mother Catherine Yochum, sisters Mary Lou Croker (Mike), Marjorie Burke (Tom), Kathleen Rosenbaum and Carol Yochum, sisters-in-law Carol and Diane Donahue, brothers-in-law Mike (Patricia), Patrick, and Tim Donahue (Elise).
Uncle Steve loved, cared for, and inspired his numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Carl Yochum and his parents-in-law, Lester and Kathleen Donahue.
Steve's warm sense of humor and thoughtful concern for others will be forever cherished by his family and friends.
He was a gentleman.
