Velma DeCarlo, 96, passed away January 9, 2011. A Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church (3663 66th St., Urbandale). The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11 at Brooks Funeral Care (7975 University Blvd., Clive). Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Velma was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. She enjoyed sharing 50 years of restaurant ownership with her late husband; bowling, cards, sewing, cooking and reading. She was a tenacious fighter, surviving a brain tumor at the age of 23.
Velma loved her family unconditionally and will be deeply missed by her son David DeCarlo, Sr. (Jill), and daughter Linda Olsommer (John). Grandchildren are Melynda DeCarlo, Dave DeCarlo, Jr. (Jennifer), Brad DeCarlo (Julie Cadam), Katie DeCarlo Mantia (Nick), Alex Minnick (Lindsay), Noah Minnick, Jennifer Lipske (Guido), Jackie Okun (Tony), and Jessica Olsommer (Jeremy Goehring). Great-grandchildren are Meredith Jinks (Stew Bevis) and McKenna DeCarlo; Colby, Ronni and Brock DeCarlo; and Gabriella and Angelina Lipske. She will also be missed by her brother-in-law, Harry DeCarlo; sisters-in-law Mamie Picucci and Florina Terry; and many nieces and nephews.
Velma was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Alfonso; her parents; three sisters and one brother. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in Velma's name to be used at a later date.
