Ruth was born, July 6, 1930 in Adair County, Iowa to Hilda Langbehn Wedemeyer and Gustav F. Wedemeyer and grew up during The Great Depression. She graduated from Casey High School in 1949 and received a two-year teaching certificate from Drake University in 1951. After teaching first-grade at Paton and Jefferson, she married returning Korean War Veteran, Kenneth C. Powell on June 6, 1954. The couple farmed near Paton before moving to Yale in 1962 where Ruth taught at Yale-Jamaica-Bagley Community Schools for eight years. During this time she commuted to classes at Drake University while juggling her full-time job, four active children and many farm responsibilities, culminating in a Bachelor's of Science degree in 1970. After moving to a farm near Adair in 1974, Ruth taught first-grade for 17 more years at the Adair-Casey School System.

Upon their retirement in 1992, the couple made traveling and supporting family members the focus of their lives. Their favorite trips were to Germany, Korea, the United Kingdom, and many national parks. Ruth enjoyed gardening and canning, reading, researching and writing families histories, visiting her grandchildren and helping her daughters with "projects." She was a loving mother and dedicated teacher whose compassion and kindness, acceptance of others, positive attitude, genuine smile, and sparkling blue eyes inspired excellence in the lives of everyone she touched.

Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Powell (George Houston), Linda Powell (Steve Sorensen), Peggy Powell; six grandchildren, two sisters, two sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, her brother, and two brothers-in-law. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Online condolences may be left at
