Mary Frances Ball
Mary Frances Ball, a retired dietitian, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at HCI Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
She was born in Alexandria, VA on November 25, 1921. Mary Frances was the eldest of seven children born to Robert and Mary (Middleton) Featherston.
In 1942 upon graduating from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in nutrition, Mary Frances worked for several government agencies in Washington D.C., including the US Secret Service and the Office of Federal Defense.
Mary Frances moved to the Des Moines area in 1961. She updated her nutrition degree with courses through Iowa State University and the University of Iowa and became a registered licensed dietitian. She served as Director of the Dietary at the Iowa Jewish Home and Northwest Hospital.
She retired in 1994 after ten years as a dietary consultant to the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center. Mary Frances was a retired member of the American Dietetic Association, Iowa Dietetic Association, American Business Women and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her son J.E. "Jeb" Ball (Elena) of Des Moines, daughter, Tracey M. Ball of Urbandale, three granddaughters, Katie Reynolds (Aaron) of Ankeny, Melissa Parsons (Shea) of Des Moines and Tina Petty (Amy) of Omaha, NE; five great-grandchildren, Isaac Reynolds, Joey Parsons, Nia Reynolds, Jeb Parsons, and Katie Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Ball III and six siblings.
At her request there will be no planned services. She donated her body to the University of Iowa, College of Medicine.
