Ed was born in the Bronx to Fred and Florrie Pollak. He was a combat veteran, serving in WWII in the Pacific. He and wife, Jane were married for 63 years until Jane's death in 2009. They had 5 children:Fred, Jim, John (Nancy Crowfoot), Nancy English, and Charlie; 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. His sister, Pat Quell lives in Houston, Texas.

Ed and Jane were active members of Plymouth Congregational Church from 1965 until moving to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell in 2008. He was an avid bridge player and crossword puzzler. His love of people and pride in his Irish heritage were well known. He enjoyed singing and never forgot a song or his family.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2014 at Plymouth Congregational Church. The family will greet friends beginning at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. A private burial will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
