John Max Choplin, 93, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Bickford Cottage in West Des Moines. A Memorial Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at McLaren's Chapel with inurnment at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

John was born December 12, 1920 in Union, IA to Carrie Ann and James Oliver Choplin. He graduated from Union High School, attended Central Iowa Business College and Coe College. On May 3, 1942 he married Joyce Mickelsen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. He worked at men's clothing stores in Marshalltown before going into the U.S. Navy as a supply officer aboard the U.S.S. Grant. John made regular runs between the Aleutian Islands and the Naval Supply Depot in Seattle, WA. After being discharged from the Navy, he spent 30 years with the C.F. Emling company selling food to schools and hospitals. John was a member of Central Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, Disabled American Veterans and was a Mason.

John is survived by his son, John (Linda) Choplin II of Indianapolis, IN; granddaughter, Julie Choplin Best, MD (Carl) of Glendale, AZ and their two children, Andrew and Katelyn; grandson, John (Janey) Choplin III of Thousand Oaks, CA and their four children, Sofia, Lara, Ryder and Emma; and grandson, James (Alyssa) Choplin of Sunderland, MD and their three children, Selah, Micah and Keilah. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce G. Choplin; two sisters and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Central Presbyterian Church or UnityPoint Hospice.
