Randy Brubaker

William Randall Brubaker of Johnston died May 3 of apparent heart failure at his home. He was 55.

Randy was born September 1, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Bill and Dora Brubaker. He grew up in Des Moines and Waterloo, where he graduated from West High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Wartburg College in Waverly.

Randy was a loving father to his two sons, Chris and Patrick. He always enjoyed coaching their sports teams, attending their events, and supporting them in their studies and work. He was also a beloved and caring son, brother, and uncle to his family.

Randy was also a loving and caring husband to his wife, Jan. They were married in 1981 in Pontiac, Illinois, and enjoyed more than 32 years of happiness supporting each other. Randy was always supportive and took care of Jan, who suffered from diabetes and heart ailments and survived breast cancer before dying of a heart attack on January 8.

Randy spent his career as a dedicated employee at the Des Moines Register. He joined the Register sports department in 1988 as a copy editor and page designer, where he quickly developed a reputation as a hard worker with high standards. Brubaker then became sports editor, copy desk chief, and eventually managing editor—second in command—of the Register. His final post was as senior news director, overseeing the investigative team and sports department. He took great pride in his work, and always fought for more open Iowa governments. He was blessed by working with great colleagues whose friendships he treasured. Over the years, the Register community—as well as the Dowling and Holy Trinity communities—became Randy's extended family.

Randy is survived by his sons Christopher and Patrick; his parents, Bill and Dora; two sisters, Sue Richardson of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Barb Brubaker of Colorado Springs, CO; and brother Doug Brubaker of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews whose successes he also took great pride in, and his mother-in-law, Joan Crowley of Pontiac, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan Brubaker.

The family is holding a visitation on Thursday, May 8, from 4:30-7pm at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. A vigil will be held following visitation at 7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 1pm. Burial services will be private.

Randy requested no flowers. Instead, he suggested memorial gifts to an educational fund that has been established for his sons or to Dowling Catholic High School, designated for its new chapel construction.
