John F. Callahan
John F. Callahan, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Village of Legacy Pointe with his wife Jane at his side. John died of COPD and natural causes.
John was born and raised in Beverly, MA and moved to Des Moines after serving in the military at the urging of a childhood friend, who was attending Drake University at the time. After finding work at the old Utica Department Store in downtown Des Moines, he met and married his wife, Jane. With a little of Jane's urging, John used his experience from the Army Air Corps to get hired with the City of Des Moines Fire Department where he worked until he retired.
John and his brother, James were raised by their grandparents following the death of their single mother, Rose Callely Callahan, who passed away at a very young age. James also passed away at a young age from an appendicitis attack.
John is survived solely by his wife of 60 years, Jane. They lived for many years at the Silvercrest Care Facility at the Woodlands in Clive where they did everything together. If you spotted one, you soon spotted the other. They loved watching sports together and, of course, they had to pull for the many Boston sports teams whenever they were on TV.
Jane would like to thank all the great medical professionals in Des Moines, along with the wonderful nurses, staff and aides they came across and have met over the years.
Jane will preside over a graveside service for John's remains at Resthaven Cemetery at a later date.
