Donald V. Cox
Donald, 92, passed away May 13, 2014 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. His funeral with military honors will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17 at Merle Hay Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Donald was born March 2, 1922 to Allen and Fern (Smith) Cox in Marathon, Iowa. Following high school, he attended Buena Vista College, the University of South Dakota and Dayton University where he earned his Doctorate Degree. Donald was involved in the Lake City School District, was a professor at the University of South Dakota and Buena Vista University and retired from education as the State Superintendant for the State of Iowa. He enjoyed coaching, refereeing and was an avid Drake University fan.
Donald also served in the US Army from 1942 to 1946 and was united in marriage with Mildred Agler on December 22, 1942.
He was a member of Highland Park American Legion, West Des Moines Kiwanis Club and Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 2012; parents and siblings, Francis Carter, VerDell Cox, Rollen Cox, Lois Murray, Gerald Cox and Karen Sones.
Donald will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be left with the family, who will designate them at a later date.
