Alice Mae Baldwin
Alice Mae Baldwin, 89, of Oakmont, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Presbyterian Senior Care. Beloved wife of the late William J. Baldwin. Dear mother of Timothy G. (Linda) Baldwin, Peter J. (Eileen) Baldwin, all of Virginia, and the late Mark V. Baldwin. Grandmother of Leidy and Timothy Baldwin of Chicago and Virginia. Dear friend to many.
A private visitation and service was held for the family. Internment followed in the Verona Cemetery, Oakmont, next to William, Mark, and her mother, Hilma Jones (Stotts). Her father, Garnier, is interned at Greenfield Cemetery in Iowa. Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 378 Delaware Ave, Oakmont, 15139. Arrangements entrusted to Burket-Truby Funeral Home Cremation & Alternative Services, Inc., Oakmont.
Alice Mae was an avid reader and was well-known for her stories of an interesting family and life in Ottumwa and other locations in Iowa; Chicago and Lake Forest, Illinois; and Hollywood, California, as well as Oakmont.
She was a proud graduate of Ottumwa High School class of 1944 and student of Ferry Hall in Lake Forest along with her best friend, another Ottumwa High School graduate, Connie Morrell. They loved to visit Chicago for cocktails and sundaes at the Palmer Hotel, dances with U.S. servicemen, and jazz concerts in clubs.
At the end of her life, Alice Mae was fond of saying: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body. Rather, skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up and totally worn out, and screaming, 'Woo hoo, what a ride'."
